Migrating Your Windows SharePoint Site From Version 2.0 to 3.0

Use the following instructions to migrate your Windows SharePoint site from version 2.0 to 3.0:

  1. From within SharePoint Designer go to File > Open and enter the fully qualified domain name of your SharePoint site.
  2. Once the site is open you will need to back it up. Go to Site > Administration > Backup site.
  3. You will be given the option to include any sub-sites you have.
  4. The wizard will back up the contents of your site to a package; save the package to your desktop. Once completed you will receive a message stating that the backup was successful.
  5. Create a CNAME record for the new site.
  6. By default your new SharePoint site is built with a template in place. SharePoint Designer will not let you restore to this top-level site where the template exists. Instead, you will need to create a sub-site where you can restore your site.
  7. To create a sub-site go into your new SharePoint site. Site Settings > Manage Sites and Workspaces > Create. Fill in the Title, Description and URL; click Create.
  8. Do not click Create when you see the page below.
  9. Once that sub-site is created go back into SharePoint Designer.
  10. Go to Site > Administration and select “Restore Web Site”.
  11. Select the file that you created in Step 4.
  12. Once selected, the process will restore your old SharePoint site to the new location.
